My Love Affair with Japan.

My decision to stay in Japan was not a decision I made lightly; it took a week of reflecting, talking to those closest to me and wandering through the busy streets of Tokyo trying to remember why it was I first came here. I feel lucky to have been put into such a great position and as I stare out my window at the view before me, I am excited.

My view.

Settling into a new country takes time, research indicates that it can take up to two years before you begin to feel immersed into a new culture and boy has that been true in my case. I have an endless list of reasons as to why it has taken me so long to adjust to life here, both personal and comical, but despite it's flaws Japan really feels like home to me now. I have travelled to 28 countries and it is the one and only place that I believe everyone should have on their bucket list; the culture, the traditions, the people, the food, the customs....they cannot be matched anywhere else in the world, Japan is unique.

From the beautiful...

To the crazy.....

To the downright weird.

However besides my love affair with Japan. I now have another predicament. Staying here now means that I have nine weeks off in the summer to do as I please and I need some help. I want to travel for six of those weeks and I am struggling to think of where to go.

My travel options so far are:
  • Backpacking through parts of SE Asia that I have never been: Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.
  • Six weeks exploring the beauty of South America.
  • Route 66 - taking in East Coast America too.

This list is obviously not extensive and I would greatly appreciate your advice on where to spend my summer. Do you have any blog posts about these destinations? Do you have any other recommendations? Please share.

  1. I would do asia myself, just because it's in the neighbourhood. Anyway, I'm sure you won't regret your decision to stay here. I've been here for ages and never regretted it. I'm not sure how immersed in the culture I am though as I have always been a stay at home person and we're a tad lazy! One of the reasons we started the blog was to get us out and about more.

  2. If you can swing it, I'd recommend South America. Don't miss Argentina, it's amazing. We're in the Netherlands now but when we do go back to the US in a couple years we will focus on those parts of Central and South America we've not seen (which is a lot).

  3. Thank you for the comment! South America is high on my list of places to visit but have always thought I would need a couple of months to do. Do you think 6 weeks is viable? Argentina - even the name itself makes me want to go!

  4. Hey there, yeah I know but I spent 4 months travelling around Asia before and i'm going to Bali in a few weeks so im wondering if I should go somewhere different?! I get what you mean, I can turn into a stay at home person very easily especially after a long week at work. With the cold weather at the moment it takes a lot to motivate me!

  5. I totally agree with you that Japan should be on everybody's bucket list. And as I said on my blog before, if I were to recommend only one place in the world to someone from the Western world, I would recommend Tokyo. For all the mentioned reasons and more.

As for what to visit, I've only been to SE Asia, and if you don't mind the heat and humidity, go for it! On the other hand, I'm sure that whatever you choose, you will have a blast!

  6. If you're ever going to do Route 66 you'd better hurry. What you want to see keeps disappearing year after year.
